Jukido Academy of Martial Arts is the longest running school of its type in Flagler
County. Owned by George Rego, chief instructor, it is unique in martial arts in
that it focuses exclusively on self defense.
“A lot of schools focus on martial arts for sports and competition but we focus
on realistic self-defense,” George said. “We also teach discipline and self-respect.”
The school teaches jujitsu, which is a versatile Japanese
martial arts form. “Our students learn to leverage their anatomy and balance to deal with
someone who is bigger and stronger who might attack them,” George said.
Ten black belt instructors assist George in teaching and running the school. Located
in a 1500 square foot space, the Jukido Academy of Martial Arts, follows a simple,
Japanese style with calligraphy on the walls, light color tones and beautiful wooden
floors.
George’s own background is Portuguese and he was raised in Connecticut where most
of his family still remain. He moved to Florida in 1999, the same year he set up
the Academy.
“We’ve seen a lot of schools come and go but ours has remained. The community has
been a big part of driving our success and our school,” George said.
He does not ask students to sign any yearly contracts and tuition is paid on
a month to month basis. “We run this school with integrity,” he said. “We have students
who want to be here and it keeps us from becoming complacent as instructors.”
